The Baldasari residence in Irvine is a unique residence that contains not a typical Asian-inspired garden but a reflection of the owners that live there. The garden itself starts from the moment you step onto the property, as you are treated to a taste of what is to follow. The detailed planting and stonework guide you to the front door. Once invited in, you are once again treated to views of the gardens through large windows. The collection of Asian art is placed throughout the home. The windows become pieces of art themselves as they showcase the outdoor spaces. The gardens are a canvas where seasonal change is welcomed. The sound of water, the feel of stone, and the warmth of breezes flow through this garden. To be viewed from within the home or within the garden, there is a sense of calm and nature that transcends the everyday life of the community beyond the garden walls.
The Smith Residence is located in Crystal Cove, a custom residential community in Newport Beach, California. The Smith Residence has unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and the hillside community of Newport Coast. Working with the client and architect, Marina Design Group was able to provide a stunning fountain water feature that sets the theme for the courtyard entrance. The rear of the house is designed to work with the interior that faces the ocean, accentuating the outstanding views. Some of the amenities include an infinity pool, spa, fire pit, and koi pond, as well as an outdoor kitchen and dining area. These amenities are intertwined with level changes and a Mediterranean planting scheme that creates a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces.
Working with the owners, Marina's design and construction team completely renovated the outdated and non-functional outdoor spaces of this custom property. Combining classic design form with contemporary building materials and color palettes, four distinct spaces now provide stunning views and outdoor access from virtually all the rooms within the home: the atrium at the main entry, terraced pools and entertainment area, dining terrace with fireplace, and a meditation garden. Other highlights include a sun deck, cutting garden, and a refurbished bluff trail to the beach below. The planting scheme unites the elegance of flowering trees and shrubs, succulents, and clipped hedge work with a coastal environment sensibility.
Since beginning the landscape maintenance at Harbor Cove, Marina has put practices in place that have enabled the community to have a consistently clean and orderly appearance. The monthly landscape inspections not only provide quality control but also offer a look toward the future to schedule upcoming landscape needs, including fertilization, annual color, and a three-year tree trimming program according to the need of each tree species. Marina continues to work closely with the Board of Directors and the management company of Harbor Cove to meet the challenges of growing and maintaining a beautiful landscape.
Marina has maintained The Gateway since construction, and this has helped in understanding the design intent and addressing problems unique to this property. Throughout the passageways and parking structures are planters with microclimates, creating challenges for proper irrigation, plant selection, and pest control. The irrigation system is extensive, and the valves, spray heads, and Netafim pipe require continual attention. The palms and trees also get regular inspection and programmed care to ensure strong, healthy plant material. Marina's complete maintenance program has helped make The Gateway a beautiful place to live.
