The owner of this Studio City home worked with The Gas Company to retrofit the architecture and yard to be LEED certified as a showcase of Green design. In the landscape, the spaces around the house were reprogrammed to reflect the family's active lifestyle. Two entertainment spaces were added, one poolside and one under a beautiful mature sycamore tree. A turf area for the kids, a handball court, and an outdoor shower take advantage of the minimal space surrounding the home. The drought-tolerant plant palette, rich in texture through the use of grasses, conserves water and lowers maintenance costs while softening the striking architecture of the geometric facade. Simulated wood paneling and a creative use of concrete make the series of steps and landings to the front door a pleasurable experience.
Seven miles of the San Diego Pipeline right-of-way made up this project and represented a formidable challenge in terms of scale and differing terrain. The unforgiving schedule demanded a concerted and concentrated team effort with both J.F. Shea and the Metropolitan Water District as Marina installed Best Management Practice (BMP) erosion control methods simultaneously with pipeline construction activities. Working within high-flow water channels, Marina installed 172 acres of hydroseed, 10 miles of straw wattles, 48 acres of 100% straw blanket, and four acres of 100% coconut blanket. Marina’s years of experience and competent leadership turned a demanding project into a showcase of excellence in workmanship.
